After attending a party in Marches Lane, Warnham, Yura Varybrus, who is currently 17 years old, stabbed Charlie sometime between midnight and early Sunday morning, July 23.
Charlie, who lived in Milford, Surrey, tragically passed away on July 25 in a hospital from his wounds, leaving his family inconsolable.
“Our son’s tragic and needless death has destroyed our lives,” they declared.
Varybrus had a trial in Brighton Law Courts in May and was found guilty of both homicide and possessing a bladed article.
At the sentence hearing on Wednesday, June 19, the media made an application to have his anonymity lifted, and Her Honor Judge Christine Henson KC allowed it.
Varybrus was given a life sentence and instructed to serve his time a minimum of 16 years before he can be considered for parole.
Charlie Cosser’s family, which includes his father Martin, mother Tara, older brother Adam, and younger sister Eloise, peaked after the case and talked on the terrible effect the murder had on them.
“When he went out to a party at the age of seventeen, our son Charlie never returned home,” stated a statement released by the family on behalf of Martin Cosser.
Charlie lost out on a very bright and exciting future as well as his mother, father, brother, and sister, who all loved him more than words can express, due to the vile and cowardly conduct of Yura Varybrus.
“Both his friends and his extended family have lost a much loved one. The absence of Charlie Cosser has left this world in much worse shape. He was a beautiful human being.
“However, as his family and loved ones, we will make sure he never fades from memory. Charlie’s Promise, our organization, was founded in his honor to address the knife crime scourge.
This is the legacy that he so richly merits. As a family, we will not allow Varybrus to take any more from us.
Detective Chief Inspector Kimball Edey, Senior Investigating Officer of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, stated: “This was a horrific crime that has profoundly affected Charlie’s family and the lives of numerous other young people.”
“I want to express my gratitude to Charlie’s family for their unwavering support during our difficult investigation, as well as to the community for its support and to all of the witnesses who came forward. Charlie’s family, friends, and loved ones can now receive justice because of this.
This terrible instance highlights the long-term effects of knife carrying. Charlie has been robbed of his life by Yura Varybrus, but his acts have also had a devastating and lasting impact on his own and countless others.
Had a knife not been brought to the gathering, this incident would not have occurred. Anyone who carries a knife should realize that all it accomplishes is put themselves, their friends, and their family in danger. Please refrain from.”
Dad Martin Cosser said in a video interview with Sussex Police that his son Charlie was known as “Cheeks” when he was a newborn and that he was “exceptionally witty and funny.”
Charlie had gone to the Warnham party with two friends, and in the summer of the previous year, he had planned a journey to Greece with friends.
However, Charlie was instead sent to Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital in critical condition after Varybrus had stabbed him during the celebration.
“I will remember the welcome we received for the rest of my life,” Martin remarked.
Charlie suffered four stab wounds. He was in terrible shape. I loved your little baby more than words can express, and there I was, powerless to help him. You can never be ready to see your child.”
Martin remarked, “We didn’t want to say goodbye.” “He was still breathing and his pupils were still responding.” On Tuesday, July 25, in the morning, the awful news was delivered.
We were informed that Charlie would never wake up and that the fluid on his brain during the operation had caused irreversible brain damage.
Martin pledged to Charlie that he would fight for justice, that his life would not be in vain, and that he would educate other youth about the repercussions of knife crime.
“My message to young people who are carrying or are considering carrying knives is that they need to think twice,” he declared.
“It is irreversible if you stab someone and, God forbid, cause their death. Transporting a knife as a weapon is no different to carrying a gun, if you are carrying it with the intent to hurt somebody. This is murder. This is a life sentence for you as well as the victim’s families. Why would you want to do that?
“I would advise everyone in that environment to pause, consider their future, and take a step back. Your upbringing, place of education, or parents’ identities are irrelevant and cannot be used as an excuse. You have a choice and are in charge of your own fate.
“Everyone is given an option. It is not necessary for you to pick up that knife, put it in your pocket, and use it during the evening. You’re not required to do it. You are presented with an option.
