A man from the Jodhpur area of Rajasthan was detained by the Uttarakhand police on August 13 after he was accused of raping and killing a nurse close to the border between Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
A special investigation team (SIT) was formed by the Uttarakhand police on Tuesday to look into the allegations of rape and murder of a 33-year-old nurse who was reported missing on July 30 in the Rudrapur area of the US Nagar district.

“We have formed a SIT into the rape and murder case in order to conduct a thorough investigation into this delicate matter and to allay any doubts and suspicions of the victim’s family. The SP (city) Manoj Katyal will serve as the SIT’s leader. Chandrashekhar Ghodke, SP (crime), will be in charge of the SIT. SIT will gather all relevant evidence from both technical and forensic perspectives in order to provide the accused with a just punishment from the court. According to the SSP, SIT will also investigate any possible additional suspects in the murder and conspiracy.
On August 13, the US Nagar police detained a man from the Jodhpur region of Rajasthan on suspicion of raping and killing a nurse who was on her way home from the Uttarakhand-Uttar Pradesh border. The 33-year-old woman was employed as a nurse at a private hospital on Nainital Road in the US Nagar neighborhood of Rudrapur, according to the police. On July 30, she left for work and did not come home. Since she hadn’t returned home the night before, her sister went to the Rudrapur police station and filed a missing person’s report the following day.
Later, on August 8, her body was found close to a colony in the UP district of Bilaspur, close to the border between Uttarakhand and UP. Her phone and purse were gone, but the body was identified. After beginning an investigation, the Rudrapur police located her mobile phone in the Jodhpur region of Rajasthan. Once in Jodhpur, police located the man. He was recognized as Shahi, Bareilly district resident Dharmendra Kumar, 28. He works every day. The accused admitted during interrogation that he had found the nurse alone on July 30 and had first looted her, then raped her, and finally strangled her to death.
Before leaving for Jodhpur, which is about 800 kilometers from the crime scene, five teams of Uttarakhand Police had to review the footage from more than 500 CCTV cameras and conduct a rigorous surveillance operation to apprehend the accused.
