According to a statement from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi, where former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was confined, he passed away on Thursday from age-related illnesses. He was ninety-two.
We regret to announce the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh, the former prime minister of India, who was 92 years old. On December 26, 2024, while receiving treatment for age-related illnesses, he suddenly passed out at home, according to AIIMS.
“At home, resuscitation efforts were initiated right away. At 8:06 p.m., he was taken to AIIMS, New Delhi’s medical emergency room. He could not be revived despite every attempt, and at 9:51 p.m., AIIMS proclaimed him dead.
From 2004 to 2014, Manmohan Singh served two terms as prime minister of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), which was led by the Congress. For the past few months, he had been ill.
Gurcharan Singh, the former prime minister’s wife, and their three daughters survive him.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the leader’s passing.
“India laments the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh ji, one of its most illustrious leaders. He became a renowned economist after rising from modest beginnings. Over the years, he left a lasting impression on our economic policy while holding a number of government posts, including Finance Minister. His parliamentary contributions were also enlightening. He worked hard to make people’s lives better while serving as our prime minister,” PM Modi stated.
“When I was Gujarat’s chief minister and Dr. Manmohan Singh ji was its prime minister, we had frequent interactions. We would discuss a wide range of governance-related topics in-depth. His humility and knowledge were always evident. My sympathies are with Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji’s family, friends, and innumerable followers during this time of sorrow. He said, “Om Shanti.”
Upon learning of Manmohan Singh’s hospitalization, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and her mother, Sonia Gandhi, arrived at the hospital.
Under then-prime minister PV Narasimha Rao, Manmohan Singh was the finance minister. He was the driving force behind the 1991 economic changes that saved India from bankruptcy and marked the beginning of an era of economic liberalization that is generally accepted to have altered the country’s economic direction.
When Manmohan Singh’s death was announced, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and party MP Rahul Gandhi were in Belagavi, Karnataka, attending the Congress Working Committee meeting. According to news agency PTI, both are going back to Delhi.
