The 2024 Copa America Golden Boot went to Lautaro Martinez, who also happened to be the tournament’s highest scorer.
The 26-year-old striker from Argentina wins the trophy for the first time after netting the game-winning goal in the championship match, his fifth of the tournament.
Martinez, who plays club football for Inter Milan, only started one of his nation’s first three tournament games, but he scored in each of them.
He grabbed the winner in the 1-0 triumph against Chile and the second goal in the first game versus Canada.
He was rewarded with a start against Peru and scored both goals in a 2-0 victory to repay head coach Lionel Scaloni’s faith in him.
Prior to his pivotal strike in the Miami final, which saw a 1-0 triumph over Colombia, Martinez also played in the quarterfinal and semifinal.
With four goals apiece, Liverpool’s Luis Diaz and Argentina’s captain Lionel Messi shared the Golden Boot at Copa America 2021.
