Heatwave and intense heat are continuing in the northern states of the country. On the other hand, heavy rains are being witnessed in the North-East. Due to the rains continuing for the last three days, 6 people have died in Sikkim so far. Hundreds of houses and many roads were washed away in landslides and floods at various places.

The most devastation has occurred in Mangan district of Sikkim. Here on Thursday (13 June), more than 220 mm of rain fell in a day. Due to this, the Sangkalang bridge built last year collapsed, due to which cities like Dzongu, Chungthang, Lachen and Lachung in Mangan district, famous for tourist places like Gurudongmar Lake and Yunthang Valley, have been cut off from the rest of the country.

Disaster management officials engaged in relief and rescue said that about 2 thousand tourists are stranded in Lachung and Chungthang. They can now be rescued only by helicopter, but it is not possible for helicopters to fly in bad weather. At present, tourists have been asked to stay where they are stranded.

The Teesta river in Sikkim is also in spate, which may affect people living in the lower areas of Singtam town. Last year, a flash flood occurred due to the bursting of a glacial lake in North Sikkim. More than 100 people died in it.

IMD has also predicted rain in Sikkim on Friday (June 14). The Meteorological Department said that there may be rain in Sikkim, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya.

The Meteorological Department has issued a heatwave warning in the northern parts. Heatwave is expected in different parts of Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Odisha on Friday (14 June). Due to the delay in monsoon, there is no possibility of relief from heat in the coming days.

On Thursday (13 June), the temperature was recorded above 46 degrees in many areas of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Bihar’s Buxar was the hottest city in the country with a temperature of 47.2 degrees. Temperatures of 44 to 47 degrees were recorded at many places in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

According to the IMD, between March 1 and June 9, Odisha has had the maximum heatwave of 27 days. Rajasthan has had heatwave for 23 days, West Bengal for 21 days, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh for 20 days, Madhya Pradesh for 19 days and Gujarat and Rajasthan for 17 days.

Now let’s talk about the monsoon

The monsoon has weakened after knocking prematurely in the southern states of the country. Former Secretary of Earth Science Madhavan Rajeevan said that the monsoon is not likely to progress rapidly for the next 8-10 days. The monsoon is expected to reach Bihar and Jharkhand between 16 and 18 June. It may reach Uttar Pradesh between 20 and 30 June and Delhi around 27 June.
