On Wednesday, August 7, at 1:35 PM IST, the men’s high jump qualification for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris will get underway. Here’s how to watch Indian sportsman Sarvesh Kushare in action.
Indian high jumper Sarvesh Kushare will compete in the qualification round at the Paris Olympics today, August 7.
The Men’s High Jump competition at the Summer Games 2024 will feature 32 competitors. Nine of these athletes have already qualified through the preliminary round by breaking the entry mark of 2.33 meters.
Sarvesh may be among the shorter competitors in high jump events at 5 feet 10 inches, but he still stands as an Indian warrior on his own. Sarvesh, who was assigned to Group B, is getting ready for action.
Sarvesh, who stands at about 180 cm, might be one of the smaller competitors in high jump competitions, but he takes these obstacles head-on with unwavering determination.
Early Life and Education
RW Jadhav, Sarvesh’s high school trainer, started him on the high jump training regimen at an early age. He trained in improvised landing pits full of agricultural waste and cattle dung, but his unwavering willpower propelled him forward in the sport.
At a young age, Sarvesh reached a height of 2.17 meters with Jadhav’s unwavering support, which opened up a job opportunity in the army. This accomplishment signaled a turning point in his career and put him on an unstoppable path of success.
Athletics Career
At the National Open Athletics Championships in Odisha in 2018, Sarvesh, then 22 years old, won his first gold medal in high jump at the elite level, setting a new meet record with a leap of 2.24 meters.
At the South Asian Championships in October 2019, Sarvesh made his debut on the international scene by winning a gold medal in the 2.26-meter jump at the Indian Open Championships in Ranchi. His height increased annually, and in 2019 he reached an amazing 2.26 meters, up from a height of 2.17 meters in 2017.
Sarvesh made a great recovery at the 2022 Indian National Championship in Gujarat, where he set a new personal best of 2.27m, despite the COVID-19 pandemic briefly stopping his progress.
After this success, he set even higher goals for himself, aiming for the national record of 2.30 meters in his subsequent jump rather than just 2.29 meters.
On his third try, he went very close to breaking Tejaswin Shankar’s national record, but his trailing leg struck the bar. Sarvesh had a great year in 2023.
He qualified for the World Championships by winning a silver medal in the Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok with a jump of 2.26 meters. Later that year, he competed for India at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, where he placed 20th out of 33 competitors overall and 11th in Group B’s qualification round.
On his second try, he managed to clear 2.26 meters but failed to clear 2.29 meters.
