According to Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, Russia will alter its nuclear doctrine in reaction to the West’s actions regarding the situation in Ukraine, as reported by the TASS state news agency on Sunday.
Ryabkov did not specify the nature of the modifications.
According to President Vladimir Putin’s 2020 decree, Russia may use nuclear weapons in the event of a nuclear attack by an adversary or a conventional attack that poses a threat to the state’s existence.
Russia has previously stated that it is thinking about making changes. Russia accuses the West of using Ukraine as a proxy to wage war against it. The clearest declaration to date that it would move forward with them came from Ryabkov.
According to TASS, Ryabkov stated, “The work is at an advanced stage, and there is a clear intent to make corrections.”
In relation to the conflict in Ukraine, he stated that the decision is “connected with the escalation course of our Western adversaries”.
