The RCMP reports that a plane crash near Tofino has left two persons dead and one badly injured.
Just after 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, there was a crash near the Long Beach Airport runway.
It “appears that a small 6-seat aircraft may have suffered an engine fire during takeoff,” according to Mounties, despite the paucity of information.
When the plane crashed, there were three persons inside. One individual was removed from the aircraft with major injuries, according to the Tofino RCMP, and transferred to a hospital.
According to Mounties, “the other two occupants have tragically died at the scene.”
Three ground ambulances, an air ambulance, and a paramedic supervisor all arrived at the scene, according to BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS).
“One patient who was transported to the hospital by air ambulance in a serious condition under the care of critical care paramedics received emergency medical treatment from paramedics,” a statement from BCEHS stated.
Based on initial accounts, the airport’s managing district, the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, believes the aircraft was a private, non-scheduled flight that crashed after takeoff.
According to Daniel Sailland, chief administrative officer of the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, which is in charge of managing airport operations, “our hearts go out to the families of those affected by this event.”
She released a statement on Thursday afternoon, saying, “We are working closely with authorities to determine the cause of this incident and to provide support to those impacted.”
