After the government revealed that he will be receiving the esteemed Dadasaheb Phalke Award, veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty said on Monday that he was speechless. The 74-year-old, who described himself as a “boy from the footpaths of Kolkata,” said he never would have thought he would be given such an honor.
“I can’t put it into words how I feel. “I cannot smile or cry with happiness; I am happy, but I am sad,” Mithun said to the news agency ANI.
“I come from Kolkata’s alleyways; I have risen from footpaths,” he continued. A boy from that location receiving such a distinction…This was beyond my imagination. I’m overjoyed. I dedicate this to my global fan base as well as my family.”
On September 30, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed Mithun’s significant honor on X. “Generations are inspired by Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey,” the writer stated. It is with great honor that we announce the awarding of the renowned actor Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his legendary contribution to Indian cinema by the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury.”
On October 8, 2024, during the 70th National Film Awards event, the 74-year-old actor will accept the honor.
Over the course of his four-decade career, Mithun gave some of the best performances. For his first film, Mrigayaa, which was directed by Mrinal Sen, he was given a National Award. The actor, who starred in multiple films between 1980 and 1990, gained notoriety as a “Disco Dancer” due to his distinctive dancing technique.
