The Delhi Capitals, who won four straight games to start the season, are suddenly out of the running. MI vs DC IPL 2025
The Mumbai Indians defeated the Delhi Capitals 121 (Rizvi 39, Nigam 20, Santner 3-11, Bumrah 3-12) by 59 runs at 180 for 5 (Suryakumar 73, Tilak 27, Rickelton 25, Dhir 24, and Mukesh 2-48).

A late assault by Suryakumar Yadav and Naman Dhir, followed by deft three-fors from Mitchell Santner and Jasprit Bumrah, helped the Mumbai Indians (MI) earn the final IPL 2025 playoff position. With the usual captain Axar Patel sidelined by the virus, the Delhi Capitals, captained by Faf du Plessis, were eliminated from the running. They have only won two of their following nine games, despite winning all four of their opening four games of the season.
MI was in some difficulty at 132 for 5 when they were put to bat on the spin-friendly Wankhede Stadium pitch with rain predicted, but Suryakumar and Dhir hammered 48 runs off the next two overs to put them at 180.
With Faf du Plessis and KL Rahul falling cheaply, DC’s pursuit never got off the ground. As a drizzle started, Sameer Rizvi and Ashutosh Sharma put on 38, giving the impression that a comeback was imminent, but Santner made sure it wouldn’t be.
MI begins steadily on a challenging pitch.
In the opening two overs of MI’s innings, Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton were hitting full balls, but Mustafizur Rahman’s angle away from Rohit’s bat caught the edge when he attempted to drive him.
Will Jacks pulled Vipraj Nigam for two fours after he dropped short after finding turn after being brought on in the fourth over. Before Mukesh Kumar undid him by going pace-off in the sixth over, Jacks smashed a four and a six off Mustafizur in the following over. Nigam finished the job with a solid running back catch. MI won 54 for 2 in the powerplay.
Nigam and Kuldeep apply the brakes. MI vs DC IPL 2025
Rickelton was less fortunate the next delivery, toeing his slog-sweep to deep backward square leg to give Kuldeep Yadav his 100th IPL wicket. Suryakumar had survived a top-edged sweep that had landed safely behind short fine leg.
While Kuldeep bowled steadily and kept the hitters quiet, Nigam varied his lengths and produced two near-chances in the tenth over. At the halfway point, MI was 80 for 3 after DC conceded just 26 runs in the first four post-powerplay overs.
With Tilak Varma hitting Dushmantha Chameera for six in the eleventh over and Suryakumar stepping out to blast Mustafizur over mid-off for another maximum in the fourteenth, MI was able to relieve some of the pressure as the pace picked up. However, Kuldeep and Nigam let up just nine runs in two overs in between.
The 15th over began with Suryakumar pulling Mukesh for four, but Tilak was dismissed four balls later, too soon into a slower ball pull. MI was 123 for 5 when Hardik cut a lofted drive off Chameera to short third in the 17th.
Suryakumar and Dhir escape MI vs DC IPL 2025
At the beginning of the 19th over, Suryakumar hit a fifty from 36 balls, sending Mukesh over the covers for six. Then, with cramping causing him to miss three yorkers and then give room when he entered the pitch, Dhir unleashed his fury, going 4, 6, 6, 4 to finish a 27-run over.
In the last over, as Suryakumar feasted on Chameera’s pace-on offerings, the assault persisted. He finished on a strong note this time by farming the strike and hitting two fours through the off side and two sixes over deep midwicket. A dab off an almost flawless yorker that rolled wide of the keeper for four was a highlight. Dhir finished his innings undefeated with 24 off eight balls, while Suryakumar scored 28 off his final eight balls.
In contrast, Suryakumar’s undefeated 73 was his 13th consecutive T20 score of 25 or more, sharing the record with Temba Bavuma.
DC loses its major guns too soon. MI vs DC IPL 2025
KL The first balls they encountered were smashed away to the boundary by DC’s most seasoned hitters, Rahul and du Plessis, making their intentions obvious. However, their effort was short-lived as Rahul, who charged early and created too much space, was caught behind off Trent Boult, and du Plessis holed out to long-on off a slower ball from Deepak Chahar.
In a close call that went in the bowler’s favor, Will Jacks spun his first ball square and then got one to go straight, stumping Abishek Porel. After that, Jacks bowled a no-ball, allowing Nigam, who had been promoted, to go off to a six over cover.
Even though Nigam struck three more fours in his next four balls, MI was still well ahead at the end of the powerplay, when DC was 49 for 3 with all four of Bumrah’s overs left.

Middle order is destroyed by Wily Santner.
Santner took advantage of MI’s start and the circumstances by tearing the ball from Nigam’s bat and then bowling the following one in faster to have him caught. In the tenth over, Bumrah then got an offcutter to beat the inside edge of Tristan Stubbs, bringing DC down to 65 for 5.
When a drizzle started and started to lighten the mood, DC appeared to be almost finished. When Jacks came too close from long-off and overran the ball, Rizvi took another four. In the eleventh over, Ashutosh hit loopy deliveries from Karn Sharma for a four and a six.
After beating Ashutosh, Santner nearly had Rizvi caught and bowled, but the batters managed to live, and DC continued to chip away, reaching 100 in the fourteenth over. But they still had a tough task ahead of them: 78 off the final six overs.
