The Delhi Capitals’ winning streak is ended by the Mumbai Indians in a thrilling match.

Karun Nair’s attempt at a comeback was unsuccessful as DC collapsed to a 12-run defeat.

The Delhi Capitals 193 (Nair 89, Porel 33, Karn 3-36) mi vs dc were defeated by 12 runs by the Mumbai Indians 205 for 5 (Tilak 59, Rickelton 41, Kuldeep 2-23).

Following a historic comeback by Karun Nair, who hammered a 40-ball 89 in a chase of 206, the Mumbai Indians (MI) won a thrilling match they had no business winning. The Delhi Capitals (DC) lost by 12 runs as their Impact Sub, Karn Sharma, opened the scoring with a three-wicket haul, causing an implosion that culminated in a hat-trick of run-outs in the penultimate over.

It indicated that there would be no more undefeated teams in the 2025 IPL. Their return at Arun Jaitley Stadium was met with heartbreak that no one could have predicted, and DC would regret the two points that were taken right out of their hands, ending their run of four consecutive victories.

Even though MI had only won twice in six games, this victory will give them new life after their campaign looked doomed less than halfway through.

    The return of Nair

Nair led DC’s pursuit after Jake Fraser-McGurk was out first ball, three years after he last participated in the event and seven years after his last IPL half-century.

The early blows to MI came from Nair’s powerplay dismissal of Jasprit Bumrah, who had just had a remarkable run of good form in the domestic season. He picked 28 from nine deliveries, including three fours and two sixes.

MI had a glimmer of hope five balls later when Axar Patel was out to a leading edge, giving Bumrah his first wicket of the year. At the end of that over, the 13th, DC was 145 for 4.

    The ball change

At the beginning of the 14th innings, MI received much-needed respite thanks to a new IPL rule change that permits teams to request a new ball to counter dew after 11 overs into the second innings.

After three balls, relief gave way to joy as Tristan Stubbs completed four wickets in four overs by toe-ending a slog. DC was in the midst of a complete collapse when KL Rahul fell in a remarkably similar manner two overs later, on the sixteenth, after being done off the pitch and in the air to top edge a return catch.

Nevertheless, DC had hope that continued to wane when Trent Boult hit five yorkers in a blazing 17th over that went for just three runs, despite the fact that 42 off 24 was required and that two batters—Ashutosh Sharma and Vipraj Nigam, who pulled off a similar comeback against LSG—were at the crease.

After giving Nigam a six and four before tricking him in the air to have him stumped, Santner, who had previously bowled what was perhaps the ball of the match to get Nair, came back at this point. Santner now received his second, and the comparatively drier ball provided plenty of spin and grip.

    The hat-trick of run outs

When Bumrah ran in for his last over on the 19th of the match, his stats were 3-0-34-1. Ashutosh was still in, so DC was hopeful. He hit him for two consecutive fours after he refused to take a single off the first ball. The first was a thick outside edge, followed by a reverse ramped over short third.

Ashutosh turned for a costly second after carving a yorker-length ball to deep point with the equation down to 15 off 8. The fact that he had to run past Bumrah as he turned around at the non-striker’s end lost him a split second, ultimately putting him short of the crease, but the choice to run the second wasn’t the issue.

Then, MI finished with a hat-trick of run-outs to end the game, with Kuldeep Yadav and Mohit Sharma being run out off consecutive deliveries.

After the wristspin twins strike, Tilak excels.

Two games earlier, Tilak Varma was substituted because he couldn’t keep up with the tempo. He made 56 off 29 in a big run chase against RCB last week on his first appearance since. He led MI in scoring with 59 off 43 on Sunday, helping them reach 205.

Amazingly, it was his first half-century in a winning cause and his seventh IPL half-century overall. MI was given a base by the knock, which Naman Dhir took full advantage of to deliver the game-winning kick.

In the middle stages, MI recovered from the wickets of Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya in six deliveries thanks to Dhir’s fifth-wicket stand of 60 off 33 with Tilak. Dhir is a floater in the batting order, scoring 38 off just 17.

After MI threatened to win the match when Rohit Sharma started by imperiously driving Mitchell Starc for two fours and then scooping him for a six, DC’s wristspin twins, Kuldeep and Nigam, combined to take 4 for 64 off eight overs.

Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav, who batted at number three for the first time this season, both got off to quick starts but were unable to convert. However, Tilak and Dhir saved the day for MI just when it looked like they might be limited. They provided them a total to bowl at, and those extra runs at the end seemed to have a positive impact on the outcome.
