Following the bomb squad’s call to Melbourne’s CBD, where many buildings were placed under lockdown, police have detained a 33-year-old male.
Just before lunchtime on Wednesday, a number of trams were rerouted from certain areas of Collins Street, and employees of adjacent buildings were instructed to remain indoors.
Victoria Police said in a statement that there was no immediate threat to the community and that the incident had nothing to do with terrorism.
According to police, the individual will be questioned by detectives as part of an ongoing investigation by the Arson and Explosives Squad.
On Collins Street, the Bomb Response Unit was observed inspecting a white hatchback for safety.
Although authorities said the bank was not engaged in the event, the police action took place outside a nearby bank.
The incident began at midday on Wednesday on Collins St, with multiple police cars and the bomb squad in attendance.
Video on social media shows a number of police vehicles blocking off the major thoroughfare.
The street was blocked off in both directions between Queen and Elizabeth St but it has since reopened.
Multiple businesses and buildings were also forced to shut, with trams also stopped from going through the street.
In a statement, the police said the incident was not terror related.
