Mamata Banerjee claimed that she addressed the BJP in her speech because she believed they posed a threat to West Bengal’s democracy.
Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, claimed on Thursday that she was the target of a malicious disinformation campaign following her speech from yesterday. She said that she said nothing at all against medical students or their protest against the rape and killing of a doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
“I detect a malicious disinformation campaign in some print, electronic and digital media which has been unleashed with reference to a speech that I made in our students’ programme yesterday,” she wrote in a lengthy post on X.
“I want to be very clear that I have not said anything negative about the movements of the (medical, etc.) students. I wholeheartedly endorse their endeavor. They move with sincerity. Contrary to what some people are saying, I never threatened them. This is a wholly untrue accusation,” she continued.
She claimed that the reason she attacked the BJP in her speech was because they were endangering West Bengal’s democracy.
“In my speech, I criticised the BJP. I have spoken out against them because they are attempting to instigate chaos and endanger our State’s democracy with the backing of the Indian government. They are attempting to instill lawlessness with support from the Center, and I have spoken out against them,” she continued.
Banerjee stated in her speech that she had shown great patience throughout the entire ordeal. She asked the doctors to go back to work after their protests.
She had threatened the doctors, the BJP said.
To be clear, the term “phonsh kara” that I mentioned in yesterday’s speech is a quotation from Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa Deva. The venerable saint had once declared that it is sometimes necessary to speak up. Protests must be voiced when crimes and criminal offenses occur. I made a clear reference to the famous Ramakrishnite proverb in my speech on that subject,” the speaker stated.
Mamata Banerjee asserted on Wednesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was using his party to start a fire in Bengal over the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata in response to the BJP’s 12-hour-long “Bengal Bandh” call.
“Some people think this is Bangladesh. I love Bangladesh; they speak like us and share our culture. But remember, Bangladesh is a separate country, and India is a separate country. Modi Babu is using his party to cause fire here. If you burn Bengal, Assam, North-East, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Delhi too shall burn! We will topple your chair,” she said.
Reacting to the remark, the BJP today compared her with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.
