Given that human lives were at stake, a bench of Justices D Krishnakumar and K Kumaresh Babu declared that the State could not treat the matter lightly.
The Madras High Court on Friday ordered the Tamil Nadu government to submit a report outlining the actions taken after 47 persons in Kallkurichi district lost their lives as a result of consuming phony alcohol.
The State government was also questioned by a bench made up of Justices D Krishnakumar and K Kumaresh Babu over why the authorities were unable to stop the disaster even though a similar incident had occurred in nearby areas the previous year.
The bench saw that complaints of counterfeit alcohol being sold illegally in the vicinity had appeared in local publications and on YouTubers weeks before to the occurrence in Kallakurichi.
The AIADMK’s legal wing secretary, IS Inbadurai, filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) plea asking for a CBI investigation into the incident, which was being heard by the court.
Attorney D Selvam, representing Inbadurai, informed the court that on March 29, 2023, M Senthilkumar, an AIADMK MLA from Kallakurichi, had filed a special motion pertaining to the sale of counterfeit alcohol in the region.
Nevertheless, he informed the Court, the State administration had done nothing.
The State has already given the CBCID charge of the incident’s investigation, TN Advocate General (AG) PS Raman said the court. He claimed that numerous police officers had been suspended and that four people had been taken into custody.
