Delhi Capitals 190 for 9 (Du Plessis 62, Axar 43, Narine 3-29) lost by 14 runs to Kolkata Knight Riders 204 for 9 (Raghuvanshi 44, Starc 3-43, Axar 2-27).
At one point, Sunil Narine’s numbers were 2.1-0-25-0. Another is Varun Chakravarthy: 3-0-31-0. The Delhi Capitals (DC) were ahead in a chase of 205 after containing a raging Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and punishing the two primary KKR weapons. To put KKR’s title defense back on track, the two of them returned with a bang, bowling their final 17 balls together for five wickets and 12 runs.
The best start for KKR
Despite having a bottom hand injury, DC’s captain Axar Patel added three sixes off Narine to his 4-0-27-2 total. After vice-captain Venkatesh Iyer was replaced and Ajinkya Rahane broke his finger, Narine was forced to take over as captain of KKR. In addition to becoming captain, he also ran KL Rahul out with a straight hit from a short, fine leg. As DC went from 136 for 3 to 190 for 9, he delivered his true blows with the ball, taking out leading scorer Faf du Plessis, Axar, and Tristan Stubbs.
KKR wasn’t complaining, but some of it was down to the DC fast bowlers’ mediocre bowling, which often continued overpitching. In seven overs, Rahane, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Narine reduced the number of errant overs to 91. They executed their second-best powerplay (79) and their greatest opening stand (48) of the season. Rinku Singh and Angkrish Raghuvanshi had to do repair work in the second half of the middle overs after all three of them were dismissed in the mid-20s, which was KKR’s lone issue.

In an IPL innings, no batter has ever hit more sixes off Narine. Varun appeared strange that evening as well; he didn’t even attempt to spin the ball and was struck by fast-paced deliveries.

When Axar struck Narine for his third six to make it 69 required off 41 with two big hitters still in the shed, it appeared to be a breeze since du Plessis was putting down pace and Axar was handling spin. In the same over, Axar happened to knock a slower short ball straight to cover, creating a gap for Narine, who took advantage of it with a little offbreak to Stubbs.
The captain, Narine, now joined in as well. He returned to Roy despite having a few tricks under his sleeve. This is the reason: at the end of his innings, du Plessis’ strike-rate was 206.25 against pace and 100 against spin. They only hit him with 16 balls of pace and 29 balls of spin. In the final 13 balls he faced, he only managed to score eight runs. When he played the last-ditch shot of 59 needed off 29, Narine was there to take the wicket.

Despite the night he had, Narine now trusted his spin twin, and DC still had Ashutosh Sharma and Nigam, who took 11 off the 17th over. Varun then sent Ashutosh and Mitchell Starc back with a dot, wicket, wicket response. The game is over.
