Director Kiran Rao’s film Laapataa Ladies is India’s official Oscar 2025 entry. The movie emphasizes women’s empowerment and gender equality in rural India.
Laapataa Ladies, directed by Kiran Rao, is India’s official Oscars 2025 entry. The movie was up against films starring Ranbir Kapoor as Animal, Vicky Kaushal as Sam Bahadur, Rajkummar Rao as Shrikanth, Kalki 2898 AD, National Award-winning Malayalam film Aattam, and Kartik Aaryan as Chandu Champion.
Aamir Khan co-produced the movie, which attracted notice for its original storyline. Laapataa Ladies, which starred Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Ravi Kishan among others, was about two newlywed brides and their travels. The movie came out earlier in the year.
“My dream would be fulfilled if it was chosen to go to the Oscars,” Rao stated to PTI. “But there’s a procedure, and hopefully Laapataa Ladies will be taken into account. Regardless of who they decide upon in the grand scheme of things, I’m sure the best film will be chosen,” the director declared.
Kiran Rao revealed in a previous interview with PTI that her ex-husband Aamir Khan, who had just returned from judging a screenwriting competition, told her the story of Laapataa Ladies.
“When Aamir got home, he told me a little story about two girls who get switched around on a train. I was hooked after that. I realized that this was a fantastic opportunity for me as well as a fantastic story.
To be really honest, I could never have created a tale like this on my own. Although it’s not usually my kind of story to write, I thought I could add a little bit of myself to it,” she remarked.
Laapataa Ladies is set in 2001, in a time when mobile phones were still considered a luxury in rural Madhya Pradesh. It is set in a village. Pratibha Ranta and Nitanshi Goel play the brides in the movie, while Sparsh Shrivastav plays the unfortunate husband who brings the wrong bride home.
