Prior to the premiere of a new documentary that is scheduled for release next week, Kevin Spacey has addressed new accusations of inappropriate behavior from the past.
Dan Wootton, a former GB News anchor, offered his thoughts on statements made in an upcoming Channel 4 program during an interview.
He acknowledged that he might have acted badly in the past, but he maintained that his actions were against the law.
In US and UK court proceedings, Mr. Spacey was found not guilty of sexual assault.
“I accept full responsibility for my conduct and past behavior. Mr. Spacey addressed Mr. Wootton, “But I cannot and will not accept responsibility or offer an apology to anyone who has made up things about me or exaggerated stories about me.”
“I’ve never told someone that if they give me sexual favours, then I will help them out with their career, ever,” he stated.
“I’ve obviously gotten involved with a few men who believed a relationship with me would help them advance in their careers. However, there was no communication with me; everything was a part of their scheme, which I was never a part of and which was bound to fail.”
Next week sees the release of the Channel 4 documentary Spacey Unmasked.
Among the people in the documentary are actors Danny De Lillo and Ruari Cannon. Both have provided interviews that were published today and claim that Mr. Spacey acted inappropriately.
According to Mr. Cannon, on a press night for an Old Vic theater show in 2013, Mr. Spacey made inappropriate physical contact with him in public. The accusation, according to Mr. Spacey, is “ridiculous and it never happened”.
Mr. De Lillo claims that while he was sat at a performance at the same theater, the actor shoved his groin in his direction. The charge, according to Mr. Spacey, was “completely offensive”.
“There were certainly times when I was inappropriate and flirty with people I worked with at that theatre, a few I had consensual liaisons with,” he stated.
Mr. Spacey was asked about several additional claims made in the documentary, and he consistently refuted claims that he had engaged in unlawful activity.
“Were there moments when I flirted with some of the twentysomething participants in those programs? Indeed. Have I dated another actor before? Indeed. Did I really make a crude move toward someone who turned out not to be interested? Indeed.
“That might not have been the best choice, and it’s not one I would make today,” he continued. However, it did occur. It was never claimed to have been unlawful, and it never was.”
Lawyers for Mr. Spacey made a statement on Friday night, claiming there was no public interest in misinforming the public about the publication of “false and unverified allegations,” many of which were “largely historic, dating as far back as nearly 50 years ago.”
According to the lawyers, Mr. Spacey was left “with little choice but to make his own public statement” in the form of his interview with Mr. Wootton because he had “not been provided with anything more than very general, anonymized information” regarding the allegations.
Anthony Rapp accused him of sexual assault, but Mr. Spacey denied any such incidents. “When I was in my twenties, it would have been simply embarrassing but not criminal,” Mr. Spacey remarked if they had.
A New York court dismissed Mr. Rapp’s sexual assault complaint against Mr. Spacey in 2022. Rapp claimed the actor touched him inappropriately when they were 14 years old at a party in 1986.
In an independent London trial held last year, Mr. Spacey was found not guilty of nine counts of sexual offenses involving four individuals from 2001 to 2013.
The Hollywood star received two Oscars: one for best supporting actor for The Usual Suspects in 1995 and one for best actor in 2000 for American Beauty.
From 2004 until 2015, he served as the artistic director of the London-based Old Vic Theatre.
The Old Vic announced in a statement that it had looked into allegations of inappropriate behavior made by Kevin Spacey at the theater between 2005 and 2013. The review was completed in 2017.
The theater acknowledged responsibility for what came to light and issued a public apology. “There were no findings of fact regarding the alleged misconduct and there is no evidence of any formal complaints being made against Kevin Spacey during his tenure,” the theater said.
In 2017, Mr. Spacey’s career was abruptly ended due to multiple allegations of inappropriate behavior.
