Amidst mounting strains within the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), the political organization to which Soren has devoted the majority of his political career, former chief minister of Jharkhand Champai Soren declared on Wednesday that he would be launching a new party.
“I had stated that I could retire, join an organization, or be friends. Champai Soren told reporters, “I will not retire; I will strengthen the party, a new party, and if I meet a good friend on the way, then I will move ahead with them,” leaving open the prospect of further alliances.
Reminded that he has just a few days left to launch a new party before the state’s elections, Soren responded, “That’s not your problem.”
“What problem will I have in forming a new (political party) when 30,000–40,000 workers can arrive within a day?” he continued, declaring that the party would be formed in less than a week.
Champai Soren’s choice to launch a new political party comes after he experienced “bitter humiliation” while serving as chief minister of Jharkhand. Days prior to this announcement, Soren made hints about his displeasure with the JMM leadership, especially in light of the sudden cancellation of his government programs by party leaders without warning.
The former chief minister took over on February 2 after then-CM Hemant Soren resigned and was arrested in connection with money laundering.
But on July 3, Hemant Soren was freed from prison and reelected as the leader of the JMM’s legislative party, which resulted in Champai Soren’s resignation, ending his term.
