It would seem that Kamala Harris is the best option, and Biden has endorsed her.
Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race for the White House leaves a gap atop the Democratic presidential ticket that the party is now rushing to fill.
Kamala Harris
Given that Biden has endorsed her, she appears to be the clear pick.
With Joe Biden’s inauguration in January 2021, US Vice President Kamala Harris has been a close contender to take over as the Democratic Party’s leader.
Being the daughter of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, Harris,59, is a trailblazer.
She was the first woman and Black person to hold the office of attorney general in California. She then became the first senator from South Asia to represent the US.
She is currently the first vice president to be both Black and a woman.
Harris gained a reputation as a tough prosecutor during her tenure, which she might leverage in a campaign that was anticipated to center on immigration and crime.
However, several progressive Democrats have criticized her harsh punishment of minor offenses, claiming that minorities were disproportionately harmed.
Additionally, Harris has a low approval rating, which may lead Democrats to look for an alternative.
Gavin Newsom
In the event of a withdrawal, there is no law dictating that the presidential candidate’s running mate takes over. This is the reason why Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, keeps coming up.
After leading the most populous state in the union for five years, the 56-year-old Democrat and former San Francisco mayor has made the Golden State a safe haven for access to abortion.
Before the Democrat withdrew, Newsom staunchly backed Biden and laughed off suggestions that he should be replaced, but he has also been quite open about his own presidential aspirations.
His increasing foreign travel, numerous advertisements praising his record, and millions of dollars invested in a political action committee in recent months have all contributed to the growing rumor that he may seek the presidency in 2028. Why not 2024 then?
Gretchen Whitmer
The 52-year-old governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer, is another potential Democratic contender.
Her state is home to sizable Black and Arab American communities in addition to a robust working-class populace, all important voter demographics that Biden battled to win over.
Perhaps Whitmer’s most well-known claim to fame as a Trump critic is that he was the intended victim of a far-right militia group’s kidnapping scheme.
Supporters of Whitmer argue that Michigan’s status as a pivotal battleground state in the upcoming presidential election on November 5th makes her candidacy a compelling one.
Josh Shapiro
In the contest for governor in November, Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania leads the largest swing state.
The 51-year-old was twice elected as the state’s attorney general before winning a resounding victory against a conservative opponent in November 2022 and taking office in early 2023.
He brought legal action against Purdue Pharma, the company that manufactures the potent opioid medication OxyContin, and denounced Catholic priests for having sexually molested thousands of children.
Being a committed moderate and a skilled orator, Shapiro has the potential to succeed in politics.
The rest
Governors JB Pritzker of Illinois, Wes Moore of Maryland, and Andy Beshear of Kentucky are among the other names that are being mentioned, but their prospects of winning appear to be minimal at this point.
There have also been references to Senator Amy Klobuchar and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who opposed Biden in the 2020 primary.
