India’s Earthquake Vulnerability
India’s location makes it extremely susceptible to earthquakes. Situated atop the Indian tectonic plate, the nation is subject to ongoing collisions with the Eurasian plate.
Because of their hilly topography, the northern and northeastern parts of the nation are particularly vulnerable to earthquakes. There are four seismic zones in India, with Zones 4 and 5 covering the majority of the country’s northern and northeastern regions. These zones are thought to be extremely active seismic zones.
According to India’s earthquake vulnerability map, Zone 5, the most seismically active area, includes Jammu and Kashmir. The potential for earthquake damage is higher in areas with dense populations and highly undulating terrain.
