Stephen Chamberlain, the now-missing tycoon who was cleared of financial irregularity charges in the US, passes away in a car accident after suffering severe injuries.
Just before the tycoon vanished in the sinking of a superyacht, on Saturday, he was involved in a car accident that left him gravely injured. This led to the death of Mike Lynch’s co-defendant in his US fraud trial.
Two days before Mr. Lynch was reported missing after a tornado sank his superyacht off the coast of Sicily, Stephen Chamberlain was struck by a car in Cambridgeshire.
Six people, including four British nationals, are missing and one person has died after the “Bayesian” boat sank in front of Porticello in the Palermo province at around five in the morning.
Two days prior to the yacht disaster, Mr. Chamberlain was involved in a car accident, it was discovered during the course of Monday night’s search for survivors.
“Our dear client and friend Steve Chamberlain was struck by a car on Saturday while out running,” a source told The Telegraph.
“He was a brave man of unmatched integrity, and we are terribly missing him. He battled valiantly to restore his reputation, which is preserved by his amazing family.
Due to allegations that he plotted to inflate the value of his company Autonomy before it was sold to Hewlett Packard, Mr. Chamberlain was charged with the same crimes of fraud and conspiracy as his former boss, Mr. Lynch.
A San Francisco jury cleared both men in June of all 15 charges.
Mr. Chamberlain was put on life support after being struck by a car on Saturday morning in Cambridgeshire, according to a person familiar with the situation who spoke to Reuters.
Mr. Chamberlain’s identity has not been released by Cambridgeshire Police, but they have issued a call for witnesses following a collision involving a car and pedestrian on Newmarket Road in Stretham.
Officers reported that at approximately 10.10 a.m., a blue Vauxhall Corsa was involved in a collision on the A1123 between Stretham and Wicken.
The victim, a resident of nearby Longstanton and in his 50s, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries, according to the force.
The car’s driver, a 49-year-old Haddenham resident, stayed on the scene to help police with their investigations.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Chamberlain served as the chief operating officer of cyber security company Darktrace after leaving Autonomy in 2012 and also volunteered as the finance director for Cambridge United FC.
