Forward Dakota Joshua of the Vancouver Canucks said on Tuesday that he had surgery to remove a tumor after receiving a testicular cancer diagnosis this summer.
Although he is still recovering from surgery, 28-year-old Joshua said he plans to play in the 2024–2025 season.
Joshua stated in a statement made public by the Canucks, “This summer, I felt a lump on one of my testicles that doctors would later diagnose as testicular cancer.” It was obviously unsettling to hear this news, but fortunately the tumor was successfully removed by the doctors. The past few weeks have been really difficult, but I’ve been lucky to have the help of my loved ones, friends, teammates, and medical professionals.
“Unfortunately, because I’m still recovering from surgery, I won’t be ready for training camp to begin. I’m working hard every day to get back to playing with my teammates, and I intend to do so as soon as this season as possible.
Joshua, a native of Michigan, made his NHL debut with the St. Louis Blues in 2020–21. Before signing as a free agent and securing a bigger role with Vancouver, he spent parts of two seasons with the Blues.
Joshua stated, “Getting checked by a doctor quickly was the best approach and I encourage men to get checked for testicular cancer, even though it was very difficult to face the reality of this specific type of cancer.” “I want to thank everyone in advance for respecting my privacy in this matter as I continue to heal. When necessary, the team will provide updates. I appreciate everyone’s patience and support in the interim.
Joshua scored 32 points last season in 63 games, including 18 goals and 14 assists, all career highs. In 184 games with the Blues and Canucks, he has amassed 64 points (33 goals, 31 assists), 567 hits, and 143 penalty minutes.
