Neither Shah nor the ICC have provided an official statement regarding the issue. August 27 is the deadline for submitting formal nominations for the position of ICC chairman.
According to ‘The Age’ on Wednesday, BCCI secretary Jay Shah is expected to assume the role of chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). When current ICC chairman Greg Barclay decided on Tuesday to forego a third term following the conclusion of his tenure on November 30, there were strong rumors that Jay Shah would be promoted.
Barclay resigned, according to The Age, “amid a $US3 billion ($4.46 billion) dispute between the governing body and its major broadcast rights holder Star.”
“Two sources with knowledge of discussions, speaking on condition of anonymity because negotiations are confidential, confirmed the move late on Tuesday night,” said the report.
According to reports, the England and Wales Cricket Board, Cricket Australia, and other full-time members have endorsed the BCCI secretary.
Neither Shah nor the ICC have provided an official statement regarding the issue. August 27 is the deadline for submitting formal nominations for the position.
As of now, Barclay, an attorney based in New Zealand, has served four of the three terms of two years each that are available to an ICC chairman.
“ICC Chair Greg Barclay informed the Board that he will not seek reelection a third time and that he will vacate the position at the end of November. In a press release from the ICC, it was stated that Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020 and then re-elected in 2022.
The chairman will be chosen by a simple majority of nine votes (51%) as per ICC rules. The election will consist of sixteen votes. In the past, the incumbent required a two-thirds majority to hold the position of chairman.
“Current directors are now required to put forward nominations for the next Chair by 27 August 2024 and if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held with the term of the new Chair commencing on 1 December 2024.”
