Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan urged banks to write off the loans of those impacted by the Wayanad landslides, criticizing banks for deducting loan EMIs from the interim relief funds credited to their accounts.
At the end of last month, there were landslides that destroyed entire villages and claimed hundreds of lives. A significant amount of farmland was also carried away by the floods.
During the State-Level Bankers Committee meeting, which was called to discuss relief efforts following the Wayanad disaster, Vijayan stated that banks ought to support the state government’s relief efforts and not anticipate repayment of the loans they have written off from the state.
The victims’ families had each received Rs 10,000 from the state. Based on this, the EMI amounts were deducted from the loan holders’ accounts by the Kerala Gramin Bank branch in Chooralmala.
People who have lost everything and require the money to rebuild have become incensed and protested in Wayanad as a result.
