Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Karimganj district would be renamed to Sribhumi to honour Rabindranath Tagore.
In honor of Rabindranath Tagore, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared on Tuesday that the state’s Karimganj district would be renamed Sribhumi.
Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore referred to the present-day Karimganj District in Assam as “Sribhumi,” or the land of Maa Lakshmi, more than a century ago. In a post on X, the Chief Minister stated, “Today, the #AssamCabinet has fulfilled this longstanding demand of our people.”
The decision to rename Karimganj as Sribhumi would “reflect the expectations and aspirations of the people of the district,” according to a photo posted by the chief minister of Assam.
The Karimganj constituency’s current Member of Parliament is Kripanath Mallah of the BJP.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to free the nation from colonial imprints” was the rationale for the central government’s September renaming of Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as Sri Vijaya Puram, according to Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
