Shaun Johnson, one of the all-time greats in New Zealand halfback history, will hang up his boots at the end of the season, capping an incredible 14 years in the NRL.

The Warriors revealed his decision in a press release on Monday, and the 33-year-old Johnson told his teammates of it.

Johnson told his teammates, “I’ve been thinking about this decision for a while, and I’m probably still coming to terms with it.”

“I know it’s still very raw, but I’m so appreciative of the club and all of you guys for making it fun for me to come to work every day.” I never considered any of it to be given.

“Let’s get back to work, the job (this season) is not over, but I just wanted to let you all know that at the end of the season, that will be me (done).”

Additionally, Johnson shared the news on Instagram, where several NFL players posted supportive comments.

It’s been the ideal day, and I got to spend it with my people. announcing my retirement at the conclusion of season twenty-four. Johnson broke the news to his teammates and coaches in a video montage, and the caption said, “Kid from the coast still can’t believe he did that, grateful.”

“Best of luck, bra! was a complete joy to run off of you. Much love, bra,” wrote Josh Curran, a former teammate.

“I love you, Cob. Among the best to ever attempt it, Kieran Foran wrote.

Isaiah Papalii, an international for the Tigers and New Zealand, posted: “Love your work bro.” Well done on your career!

Since making his debut in 2011, Johnson has participated in 265 games for the Warriors (221) and Sharks (44).

He currently holds the fourth position on the Warriors’ all-time list with 221 games played.

In 2023, Johnson’s outstanding play helped the Warriors secure a surprising fourth-place finish, and the halfback had one of his best seasons to date.

His performance nearly brought him a Dally M player of the year award, and he would have taken home the trophy if Kalyn Ponga hadn’t pulled off an incredible late-season comeback, defeating Johnson by a mere one vote in the championship round.

Unfortunately for Johnson and the Warriors, a number of injuries have affected his play this season, making it difficult for him to regain that form. The Warriors are currently ranked 13th as of the end of Round 22, and they must win out to advance to the finals.

Johnson is credited by Warriors CEO Cameron George with fostering rugby league growth in New Zealand.

Shaun Johnson is responsible for an entire generation of children in this nation who have picked up a rugby league ball, according to George.

“His influence on this team as well as rugby league in New Zealand will live on here in perpetuity.

And in addition to his incredible skill and brilliance on the court, Shaun has had a significant personal influence on the Warriors over the years.

“His influence on not just this team but also rugby league in New Zealand will live on here forever.”

“I am aware that Shaun did not make this decision lightly, and the club and his peers fully support him in his departure.

“This sell-out home finale against the Bulldogs will serve as a fitting send-off for him at Go Media Stadium.

“We are grateful for everything Shaun has done for the club and we hope the best for him and his family going forward.”
