Heavy rains lashed Mumbai and its suburbs on Sunday, disrupting flight operations and inundating roads in many parts of the city. Flight operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport were suspended twice for a brief period due to bad weather and low visibility. At least 15 flights were diverted to nearby airports till 4 pm.
PTI, Mumbai: Mumbai and its suburbs received over 100 mm rainfall in 12 hours till 8 pm on Sunday, leaving roads inundated in several areas, forcing flight diversions and affecting local train traffic on the Central Railway section between Dadar and Matunga stations.
Heavy rain also affected flights
Officials said Mumbai city recorded 101 mm of rain between 8 am and 8 pm, while the eastern and western suburbs received 121 mm and 113 mm rainfall respectively. A total of 36 flights were cancelled at Mumbai airport and 15 flights, including those operated by Air India, IndiGo and Akasa, were diverted to nearby airports till 4 pm amid intermittent heavy rains in the city.

Sources said the airport operator had to suspend runway operations twice during the day due to heavy rains – once for eight minutes at 12.12 pm and the other time from 1 pm to 1.15 pm. Local train services on the Harbour Line were delayed by 15 to 20 minutes due to waterlogging near Mankhurd, Panvel and Kurla stations, while services on the Western Railway section continued normally.
