Federal health officials said on Friday that a multi-state listeria outbreak connected to sliced deli meat has resulted in two fatalities and 28 hospitalizations in the United States.
across a news release, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stated that people had fallen ill from listeria, a bacteria that may lead to foodborne infections and is particularly dangerous during pregnancy, across twelve states in the Midwest and East Coast. The deaths took place in New York and Illinois. Moreover, New York had seven instances, according to CDC data.
Samples from the ill individuals were gathered from May 29 to July 5. According to the CDC, 16 out of the 18 ill individuals who were interviewed claimed to have eaten meats that were cut at deli counters, most frequently turkey, liverwurst, and ham. Currently, the CDC is looking into which meat varieties might be tainted. The CDC stated that there is no proof that eating premade deli meats caused illness in humans.
According to the CDC, people who are more susceptible to contracting listeria should refrain from consuming meat that has been cut at deli counters unless it has been heated to 165 degrees or until it is extremely hot.
When the germs from listeria enter other parts of the body from the gut, it can lead to serious sickness. Due to its potential to result in miscarriages, it is especially concerning for expectant mothers. Pregnant women may also experience weariness, aches in their muscles, and fever.
Anyone exposed to the illness may suffer from fever, muscle aches, convulsions, confusion, headaches, stiff necks, and loss of balance.
