After helping La Roja defeat England 2-1 to win the title for a fourth time in Berlin on Sunday, Spain’s Rodri was voted the best player of Euro 2024.
Due to a knee injury, Rodri had to be removed at halftime during the final, but he was nevertheless rewarded for his outstanding play as Spain defeated both the host Germany and France to advance.
The Manchester City player’s lone goal of the competition came in a 4-1 victory over Georgia in the round of 16.
Coach Luis de la Fuente, however, praised him as a “perfect computer” for his metronomic passing and game reading, which were essential in guiding a youthful team through an extremely challenging run for victory.
Rodri said, “My God, what a day, this is definitely the best day of my career,” while receiving the Player of the Tournament trophy.
“You only need to look at the family we’ve created… We are now the national team with the most European Championship victories,” Rodri remarked, praising Spain’s youthful players in particular—Lamine Yamal had her 17th birthday on Saturday while Nico Williams is only 22 years old. They took home the prizes for young player of the tournament and player of the match.
“A lot of us here have won European Championships for our Under-19 and Under-21 teams, and this is something you work hard for and is cultivated,” Rodri remarked. “We are the champions of Europe today, and we won’t give up.”
