By year’s end, Stop & Shop locations in Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York are anticipated to close. According to the local grocer, a strategy is being developed for its staff.
By the end of the year, Stop & Shop plans to close 32 of its underperforming supermarket locations spread across five states in New England.
Plans for closures in the following states were announced by the Ahold Delhaize USA Company-owned community supermarket network on Friday:
- Connecticut: 5 stores
- Massachusetts: 8 stores
- New Jersey: 10 stores
- New York: 7 stores
- Rhode Island: 2 stores
Gordon Reid, president of Stop & Shop, stated, “We are proud of the strong roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer for more than 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers, and communities.” “As we previously stated in May, Stop & Shop has assessed its entire portfolio of shops and has made the painful decision to eliminate underperforming locations in order to build a strong foundation for our brand’s future expansion.”
It is anticipated that the supermarkets in the five states would close on November 2nd, perhaps earlier. Rolling closures will be implemented, according to the announcement.
The firm declared that it will keep running 350 of its locations across the five states.

Will the Stop & Shop employees lose their jobs?
According to the press statement, Stop & Shop employs 58,000 people and runs about 400 locations in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.
Before the stores close, a representative informed USA TODAY that they are collaborating with their staff.
“The 32 affected stores’ employees are all being presented with alternative career paths within the organization,” stated in a statement from Caroline Medeiros, Stop & Shop’s corporate communications manager. “We will notify local customers well in advance of any store closures of the precise dates of store closures.”

Future plans for Stop & Shop
The grocery chain is planning for the future even though it has announced the closure of 32 locations in five New England states.
“I would like to share – although this news is difficult, we are proud that we are retaining our associates and of the investments we are making in the Stop & Shop brand for future growth, especially in delivering lower prices and improving customer experience through remodels,” Medeiros stated. “Since 2018, we have completed more than 190 store remodels, with the customer shopping experience in mind and these stores are outperforming other Stop & Shop stores that haven’t been remodeled.”
