“I feel like the next movie I make needs to feel like a movie that I absolutely have to make,” she stated.
“I refuse to produce the Polly Pocket film. I spent three years writing and developing a script. However, I recall seeing someone describe Nancy Meyers as having the most fantastic taste in movies—whether they are made with or without a studio, with notes or not—and how her tastes always seem to mesh flawlessly with what the general public wants to see. That is one hell of a present. Additionally, Nora Ephron was a great mentor to me, but she was always telling me to “go be weird.” Never submit to anyone,” she murmured.
Mattel claims that it is still hoping to turn the IP into a movie.
A Mattel representative told The Hollywood Reporter, “Polly Pocket is in active development, and we look forward to sharing updates on the project soon.” “We wish Lena all the best! She is an amazing writer and creator.”
In 2021, it was revealed that Duham would write and direct the movie, which would center on the friendship between a small child and a diminutive woman. Lily Collins has been signed on to play the title toy.
Even though she isn’t working on the movie anymore, Dunham is still working on Too Much, a semi-autobiographical comedy series that will launch on Netflix in 2019. Megan Stalter will play the lead in the co-created series by Dunham and her husband Luis Felber. She will play an American lady in London who is bewildered after a difficult breakup in New York and meets Will Sharpe, a recovering punk singer, and tries to decide if they can establish a life together.
Even though Dunham’s life was mirrored in the series, the author gave an explanation for her reluctance to take the lead. She told The New Yorker, “I knew from the very beginning I would not be the star of it,” before complimenting Stalter. “First of all, I was greatly inspired by Meg Stalter after seeing her art. She’s incredible, and I have no doubt that everyone will be astounded. We are aware of her humor. But then you’re thinking, “Oh, we got a little Meryl Streep on our hands!” when she walks into a dramatic moment. I found myself wondering a lot: what is it about women that allows them to be complex on television and still be accepted, understood, and seen? There is a willingness to Meg’s presence that I think goes a long way. She has whatever the opposite of resting bitch face is. She has resting angel face.”
She continued by saying that she didn’t want to be a celebrity in order to prevent the public from “dissecting” her body once more.
“I also believe that at this point in my life, I was unwilling to go through anything similar to what I had gone through with girls. I simply wasn’t ready to have my body scrutinized once more on a physical level. Not casting Meg was difficult because I knew I wanted her, but coming to terms with my desire for her was. I used to believe that the key to winning was to just keep going without caring what other people thought. I failed to realize that the key to winning is really just taking care of yourself and continuing to work.
Dunham continued by saying that she is not interested in attention and that creating work is what gives her a sense of empowerment. It’s my only desired action. Aside from my closest friends and family, my dogs, and books, it is the only thing I have ever loved,” she continued.
“I recall thinking, ‘You are my muse,’ as I looked at Meg. Every day, you give me the motivation to go home and write pages and pages. I’m not interested in being my own muse at all.
Given that Too Much will be available on Netflix, it is a change of direction for Dunham, whose prior creative home for Girls was HBO.
Dunham clarified the move by saying, “I think the whole business is changing.” I had a great time using HBO. I’m hoping for more. My executives there are still close to me. With these two projects, Netflix and I happen to have a really creative relationship. It’s important not to take someone lightly if they share your enthusiasm and understanding for a topic that you’re passionate about. It’s similar to when you’re young and you keep stating there are a lot of fish in the water, only to find later that you weren’t as right. I sense that business is slowing down. I thus like living a creatively polycentric lifestyle. It makes no sense for one producing home to comprehend what you produce, just as it makes no sense for one person to be able to satisfy all of your demands.
Dunham, who played a Holocaust survivor’s daughter in Treasure, recently acted with Stephen Fry. Female Friendship and a Netflix C.I.A. series, which Dunham previews as being about “what happens when a group of college kids, who have all the issues, pains, and fears of college kids, are tasked with an agenda of national protection,” are the two productions Dunham is working on under her firm Good Thing Going. In addition, she’s penning a memoir.
