Before the Portugal team’s Euro 2024 Group F opener against Czechia began on Tuesday at Leipzig Stadium in Germany, Cristiano Ronaldo broke a record.
Ronaldo participated in the 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024 European Championships after making his debut in 2004. The Al Nassr forward was selected in Portugal’s starting lineup for the encounter against the Czech Republic.
He surpassed Luka Modric, a former Real Madrid colleague, and fellow countryman Pepe, who have participated in five tournaments, including 2024, with the former captaining Croatia into the competition in Germany.
Portugal’s most successful captain and top striker, Ronaldo, guided his team to victory over France in the 2016 European Championship final, their only championship to date.
The 39-year-old enters the competition fresh off a successful season in the Saudi Pro League, where he scored 33 goals in 2023–24 to win the Golden Boot. With 14 goals throughout six campaigns and 25 games played, he holds the record for most goals scored in the European Championships.
Portugal meets the Turks three days after drawing Georgia, Turkey, Czechia (also known as the Czech Republic), and Turkey in Group F.
In the meantime, Turkey easily defeated 3-1 to begin their Euro 2024 campaign over Georgia, which included a stunner by Real Madrid youngster Arda Guler.
