Up to 260 million people a year will be handled by “the world’s largest” terminal at Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport once it is completely operational. On Sunday, Dubai declared that work on a new terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport had begun. With a projected cost of around $35 billion, the ruler of the Gulf emirate declared that it will become “the world’s largest” terminal.
“We are starting construction of the building for AED 128 billion ($34.85 billion),” stated Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the prime minister of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Dubai, on X. “We approved the designs for the new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport.”
An announcement from the government states that the new terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport will have the capacity to accommodate up to 260 million passengers annually once it is fully operational.
One of the busiest flight hubs in the world, Dubai International Airport, is “five times larger than this one,” according to Sheikh Mohammed, who also claimed that it had “the world’s largest capacity.”
“With a capacity to serve 150 million passengers annually, the initial phase of the project will be completed within a decade,” stated Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, CEO of Emirates and head of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority.
The CEO of Emirates also stated that the airport will function as the new home of all airline partners that facilitate international connections to and from Dubai, as well as the flagship carrier Emirates and its low-cost counterpart Flydubai.
Since 2010, a considerable amount of Dubai’s air traffic has not yet arrived at Al Maktoum Airport, which is situated on the outskirts of the city.
The goal of the authorities is to replace Dubai International Airport, which has the capacity to handle up to 120 million passengers a year but is unable to grow because of its strategic location within the city.
