At last, Hugh Jackman has reverted back to his Wolverine persona.
On Monday, Marvel Studios released a new teaser for “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which featured video of Jackman donning the Wolverine suit for the first time since “Logan” in 2017. Collaborating with Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool, he is assigned a task by the Time Variance Authority from “Loki.”
In the first scene of the teaser, Deadpool approaches Wolverine in a bar, asking for assistance and letting him know that his “world” has fallen apart.
“This Wolverine let down his entire world,” the character played by Matthew Macfadyen exclaims. Deadpool is informed by Wolverine that he is not a “hero,” and the two fighters engage in combat in front of the wreckage of the 20th Century Fox emblem.
For the first time ever, Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine in a yellow suit is seen, bringing the character’s recognizable appearance from the “X-Men” comic books into a live-action movie. In 2000, the first “X-Men” film made fun of the notion that Wolverine would dress in this manner during a sequence in which he bemoaned his costume. Another figure asks, “What would you prefer, yellow spandex?”
A new teaser for “Deadpool & Wolverine” suggests MCU ties.
Additionally, Deadpool makes his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in “Deadpool & Wolverine” after Disney acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019, which held the film rights to “X-Men” and “Deadpool”. In the teaser released on Monday, Deadpool and Wolverine are seen leaping into what appears to be one of Doctor Strange’s portals, and there is a glimpse of what appears to be a massive Ant-Man helmet, among other references to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The trailer also has a joke on Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige in true “Deadpool” fashion. “Cocaine is the one thing that Feige said is off limits,” Deadpool asserts, addressing worries that Disney may dilute the R-rated series. Deadpool smashed the camera earlier this month at CinemaCon during a sneak peek of the movie, saying, “Suck it, Fox! Disneyland is where I’m headed.”
Following Wolverine’s death at the end of “Logan,” Jackman’s much awaited return will take place in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The decisive nature of the “Logan” finale led Jackman to state for years following that he never expected to portray Wolverine again. However, he shocked fans in 2022 when he announced he would play the same role again. Later, the actor admitted to CNN’s Chris Wallace that he “really thought I was done,” but he was drawn back to the role of Deadpool played by Ryan Reynolds.
When the initial “Deadpool & Wolverine” teaser trailer aired before the Super Bowl in February, it teased Wolverine’s shadow and cut to the title before seeing him on screen, keeping fans guessing about when he would make a comeback. Macfadyen (“Succession”) plays an agent from the Time Variance Authority, a body that regulates time flow, among the other cast members.
Will ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ undo ‘Logan’ ending?
Fans worry that “Deadpool & Wolverine” may ruin Wolverine’s heartbreaking death scene from “Logan.” However, Jackman and Reynolds have already stated that the ending of the 2017 film will remain unchanged.
Reynolds said, “‘Logan’ takes place in 2029,” in a video with Jackman from September 2022. “A completely different matter. I won’t talk about Logan’s death in “Logan.”
The mention of “this Wolverine” in the video may also suggest that Jackman is portraying a distinct character from the one shown in “Logan.” It was previously established by Marvel that different versions of its heroes exist in other realities, as evidenced by the stories “Loki” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
“Deadpool & Wolverine” will be a crucial test for Marvel, considering the company’s last release, “The Marvels,” was a huge box office bust in November. The test will determine whether or not superhero fatigue has set in among moviegoers. Additionally underperforming at the box office in February 2023 was “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” which positioned Jonathan Majors for a role akin to that of Thanos as the next big villain in the Marvel universe. Majors was found guilty of abusing his ex-girlfriend, and Marvel later dismissed him.
Date of “Deadpool & Wolverine”‘s release
“Deadpool & Wolverine” is slated to be the sole Marvel Studios movie released in 2024 when it opens in theaters on July 26.
