The BCCI released a new schedule on Monday night, stating that IPL 2025 will commence on May 17 and conclude on June 3.
Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad will host the remaining matches of the tournament. The BCCI had temporarily halted the IPL on May 9 due to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. It will announce the playoff locations later. The matches are scheduled as follows: the first qualifier on May 29, the eliminator on May 30, the second qualifier on June 1, and the final on June 3. Teams will play 17 games after the restart, including two doubleheaders, both on Sundays.
The updated schedule includes 13 league games and 4 playoff games. On May 24, in Jaipur, which will serve as PBKS’s temporary home base, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) will play the Delhi Capitals (DC) in a match that was called off midway through the first innings on May 8 in Dharamsala. Originally scheduled for May 11 at their second home base of Dharamsala, PBKS will play the Mumbai Indians (MI) two days later. Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will meet in Bengaluru in the match that will kick off the tournament on May 17.
Rajasthan Royals (RR) will play PBKS in the day match at 3:30 p.m. IST on May 18, and DC will play Gujarat Titans (GT) in the evening at 7:30 p.m. IST on the first of the two doubleheader days. The next Sunday, May 25, will see Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) play KKR in Delhi at 7:30 p.m. IST, while GT plays Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Ahmedabad during the day. On May 27, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and RCB will play their final league match in Lucknow.
Three teams—PBKS, CSK, and SRH—will no longer be able to play on their original home grounds as a result of the venue changes. PBKS will consider themselves unlucky to have two of their home games shifted to neutral venues, while CSK and SRH are already eliminated from the playoff race. Prior to the tournament’s suspension, PBKS was in third place with 15 points from 11 games.
The BCCI undertook “extensive consultations with government and security agencies, and with all the key stakeholders” prior to deciding to resume the competition, according to the official release.
The ODI series between England and the West Indies, starting on May 29 in Birmingham and ending on June 3 at The Oval, will now coincide with the postponed IPL, which was originally scheduled to conclude on May 25 in Kolkata. This will create scheduling conflicts for players like Sherfane Rutherford (GT), Shamar Joseph (LSG), and Romario Shepherd (RCB)—all selected for the West Indies ODI team.
Despite the fact that England has not yet revealed their roster, the following players may be impacted given the playoff progress: Will Jacks (MI), Reece Topley (MI), Liam Livingstone (RCB), Jacob Bethell (RCB), Phil Salt (RCB), and Jos Buttler (GT).
With Australia and South Africa scheduled to compete in the World Test Championship (WTC) final starting June 11 at Lord’s, the updated IPL schedule now leaves only seven days between the IPL final and the WTC final. The updated IPL schedule may also impact India’s plans. Two unofficial Test matches at Canterbury and Northampton will begin on May 30 as part of a tour of England. During the A-team matches in the IPL, a few of India’s peripheral Test players who are anticipated to feature in the five-Test series beginning in England on June 20 will continue to play.
For now, the biggest logistical challenge for the ten IPL franchises will be reassembling their squads, including bringing back international players and support staff, many of whom began returning home after the suspension.
