The Congress celebrated Indira Gandhi’s 107th birthday on Tuesday, the day she became India’s first female prime minister.
Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress party, and Mallikarjun Kharge paid their respects at Indira Gandhi’s memorial in the nation’s capital, “Shakti Sthal.”
As they reflected on her legacy, the Congress party paid homage to her commitment to the country and characterized her as a beacon of “courage, strength, and determination.”
“Grandma was an example of both courage and love,” Rahul Gandhi wrote in a touching post on X. She taught me that walking boldly on the path of national interest is the true test of strength. My strength lies in her memories, which always guide me.
On X, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also posted a heartfelt remark emphasizing Indira Gandhi’s longstanding relations to India’s tribal populations.
“In every election campaign, my grandmother Indira Gandhi began in Nandurbar, Maharashtra. Because the tribal community respects and preserves nature, she thought their culture was the best and most distinctive. She strengthened the tribal society by enacting numerous significant legislation for them after she was elected prime minister. Her policies mostly benefited the impoverished, backward, tribal, and Dalit communities.
“The Congress party is advancing Indira Gandhi’s principles today by calling for a caste-based census and raising the SC/ST/OBC reservation threshold from 50%. Dadi Ji! We will never forget the ideals and service lessons you taught us,” she continued.
In its official post on X, the Congress party said, “Indira Gandhi was a symbol of fortitude and tenacity. Her revolutionary leadership broke down barriers and shaped India’s destiny, propelling the country to unprecedented heights. We honor Indira Gandhi, whose patriotism and dedication to the country inspire millions of people.
“Crores of Indians shall continue to draw inspiration from the life of ‘Iron Lady of India,’ Indira Gandhi, for she was the epitome of lifelong struggle, courage, and dynamic leadership, who selflessly contributed to nation-building,” Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote in a post on X in remembrance of Gandhi. Kharge also added that Gandhi gave her life to protect India’s unity and integrity. Our modest tribute on the occasion of her birth.
