The full name of this medical college is Maharani Lakshmi Bai Medical College Jhansi (MLBMCJ). This medical college is spread over 380 acres.

The initiative to establish Jhansi Medical College was taken by Dr. Sushila Nair, the then Health Minister of the Government of India. She was also an MP from Jhansi Lok Sabha seat. On 16 December 1965, Dr. Sushila Nair laid the foundation stone of the college. His aim was to build a government hospital where the poor people of Bundelkhand could be treated.
After this, this college came into existence in the year 1968. This college was started in 1968 by giving admission to the first batch of 50 MBBS students. In 1970, Professor S.K. Saxena took charge as the head of the anatomy department of the college. On 1 September 1971, Professor S.R. Kapoor became the first principal of this college.
