On the fourth day of the second Test in Kanpur, India’s opening batsmen, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, broke the global record for Test cricket as they came out to bat against Bangladesh. Following their first-inning 233-run wicket-taking of Bangladesh, Rohit and Jaiswal displayed their aggressive intent from the very first delivery, hitting the opposition’s bowlers all over the field. With three overs remaining, Rohit and Jaiswal reached the fifty-run threshold primarily with fours and sixes. It was the first time in Test cricket history that a team had scored 50 runs in the first three overs since the sport’s data collection started.
Formerly, England’s 26-ball fifty-ball record was the fastest in Test cricket history. Nevertheless, the Indian side broke the record by a significant amount, scoring a team half-century in just 18 balls. Earlier this year at Trent Bridge, England had set a record against the West Indies.
In Chennai in 2008, India’s fastest team fifty came against England. In the encounter, the Indian team had achieved the fifty-run mark in 5.2 overs.
