This weekend, severe thunderstorms and lightning are predicted to lash much of England and Wales.
The storms, which will come after this week’s stretch of dry, warm weather, could bring up to 70mm of rain in a matter of hours.
Two yellow weather warnings have been issued by the Met Office for Friday and Saturday, indicating that flooding, disruptions to public transportation, and lightning-related damage to buildings are to be expected in the affected areas.
The alert is in effect on Friday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and covers the majority of southwest England, portions of Wales, the Midlands, and west London.
The second warning, which covers all of Wales, south-west England, the Midlands, and portions of south-east England, is in effect starting at one in the morning on Saturday.
The weather service has issued a warning that thunderstorms and intense showers on Saturday may be accompanied by hail and frequent lightning, with the worst-hit areas potentially receiving up to 70mm of rain.
“We are being spoiled by almost summer’s last hurrah, but there’s a bit of a change coming down the line as we move through towards Friday, and especially the weekend,” said Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud on Thursday.
