The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection (HYDRA) is demolishing popular actor Nagarjuna’s N-Convention center because it is allegedly encroaching on the Full Tank Level (FTL) area and buffer zone of the Thammidikunta Lake.
The spread of any body of water over which building is prohibited is referred to as the FTL. Additionally, a buffer zone is still in place between the FTL area and water bodies to stop encroachment.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) zonal commissioners were entrusted earlier this year with the formation of lake protection committees to stop encroachment upon water bodies within and surrounding the city. According to recent data from the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Hyderabad’s lake area shrank by 61% between 1979 and 2024.
According to reports, Nagarjuna’s Convention Center occupied 2. acres of buffer zone space in addition to 1.12 acres of FTL land. Official sources estimate that Thammidikunta Lake’s FTL area is roughly 29.24 acres.
The property was investigated for a number of years. The GHMC had not, however, taken any action in response to it. Allegedly, the convention center’s management used its power to evade regulatory actions from relevant authorities.
Telangana’s Minister of Roads and Buildings, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, officially complained about the convention center to HYDRA on Wednesday. Along with a Google Earth map and an FTL map indicating the encroachment, he enclosed them with his complaint.
After the demolition drive, the actor took to social media on X, formerly known as Twitter. Not a single inch of the tank plan has been encroached upon; the land is Patta territory. As a law-abiding citizen, I would have personally completed the demolition if the court that the matter is currently before had decided against me,” he wrote.
In addition, he asserted that he received no notice before this morning’s demolition.

HYDRA for Telangana Core Urban Region (TCUR) was recently established by the Congress government to handle disasters, protect assets, and perform other duties. Lakes, parks, open spaces, playgrounds, and other government properties are under their management and protection.
Under AV Ranganath, an IPS officer, HYDRA has been tearing down illegal buildings throughout the state in order to reclaim land that has been encroached upon by water bodies. They destroyed unauthorized buildings earlier this month in the Rangareddy district’s Gandipet reservoir and the Shastripuram heritage lake Bum-Rukn-Ud-Dowla.
