On Thursday, the supreme court began deliberating on cases concerning the purported sexual assault and killing of a female physician at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital located in Kolkata.
What the Supreme Court said: The bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud chastised the West Bengal government and the state police, as well as the former principal of the institution, Sandip Kumar Ghosh, during the case’s Tuesday hearing after taking suo-moto cognizance of the matter. The bench also questioned Ghosh’s involvement, stating that it appeared an attempt was made to disguise the murder as a suicide.
Current status of CBI investigation: Ghosh and Sanjay Roy, the primary accused civic volunteer, have been subjected to questioning by the CBI. The central agency turned over the investigation from the Kolkata police, and it has since sent the top court the 3D scanned crime scene, documents, and video footage. With the help of specialists, the crime scene was duplicated multiple times and samples were gathered. The accused’s movements as captured on CCTV have also been examined.
CJI questions senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who is representing the West Bengal government: “The entry regarding the unnatural death is concerning because it mentions a time of 10:10 p.m. An unnatural death was reported to the police station at 10:10 p.m. Despite everything mentioned above, the crime scene is secured between 11:30 and 11 p.m.
“We have stated clearly that committees are expected to interact with all relevant parties. Please let the resident physicians know that you will be reaching out to them. The committee should consider the main concerns of medical professionals and paramedical staff. Senior doctors who are women make up the committee. Regarding the doctors who are on strike, CJI Chandrachud stated, “They will hear from interns, residents, senior doctors, and paramedicals.
