Live updates on the doctor rape and murder case in Kolkata: West Bengal’s state-run hospitals’ ability to provide healthcare services is still impacted by junior doctors’ strike, which is in its 13th day.
For the sixth day in a row on Wednesday, members of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) interrogated Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, about the rape and killing of a young physician working the night shift on hospital grounds. According to the news agency PTI, a polygraph test might also be administered to Ghosh. An official told PTI, “We want to further verify Ghosh’s answers, as there have been discrepancies in some of the replies.”
West Bengal’s state-run hospitals’ ability to provide healthcare services is still impacted by junior doctors’ strike, which is in its 13th day. At several hospitals, senior physicians were asked to report for duty in lieu of junior medics, officials told the news agency PTI, despite the state government’s insistence that the protestors return to their jobs.
National indignation was sparked on August 9 when a 31-year-old postgraduate doctor was brutally raped and killed inside the hospital’s seminar hall. A civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy was taken into custody. Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, is coming under fire for how her administration handled the case.
A nine-member task force has been established to devise strategies for ensuring the safety of doctors at their places of employment after the Supreme Court bench, acting on suo moto, expressed grave concern over the “horrific” rape and murder of the trainee physician. Additionally, it has mandated that the trainee doctor’s name, images, and videos be taken down from all media outlets. It mandated that by August 22nd, the CBI submit a status report.
In an effort to bring justice to the trainee doctor who was raped and killed on Wednesday at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, former athletes took to the streets.
“All the players are here to protest against the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital incident and we demand justice,” stated former East Bengal goalkeeper Sumit Mukherjee.
