When is Janmashtami celebrated?
In the Rohini Nakshatra, Bhagavan Sri Krishna was born at midnight on Ashtami tithi, the eighth day. According to the Amanta and Purnimantha calendars, Lord Krishna was born in the month of Shravan and Bhadrapad, respectively. The exact date is dependent on the lunar cycle and corresponds to the English calendar months of August through September.
The story behind Sri Krishna Jayanti
Krishna was the eighth child of Princess Devaki and her husband Vasudeva, who were members of the Yadava clan in Mathura, according to mythology. In order to keep Devaki from fulfilling a prophecy that stated Devaki’s eighth son would kill Kansa, Kansa, the king of Mathura at the time, killed every child that Devaki had given birth to. After Krishna was born, Vasudeva brought him to his friend’s home in the Mathura neighborhood of Gokul. Krishna was then raised at Gokul by Nanda and his spouse Yashoda.
