China won the gold medal in the team artistic swimming competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris on Monday, surpassing Spain, who currently hold the silver medal, with a fast-paced technical routine.
As they attempt to win their first artistic swimming gold, the Chinese team demonstrated that they are a team to be reckoned with. Since 2000, Russia has won every gold medal in the sport; however, due to its exclusion from the Paris Games due to the invasion of Ukraine, China and other nations now have a chance to compete at the highest levels.
The audience was impressed by China’s team even before they hit the water, as one swimmer launched herself into the pool while standing atop her seven teammates.
The women performed to Wu Mingxuan’s composition “Speed and Passion” while donning sequined swimsuits in red and black. The routine lived up to the name of the song.
The spectators were enthralled as the team threw one swimmer into the air, who executed multiple twists before splashing down.
The routine received 313.55 points from the judges, 26 points more than second-place Spain.
Italy took home the bronze medal for their upbeat disco dance-themed performance.
Three performances will determine the competition for the gold medal in team artistic swimming: the technical, free, and acrobatic routines. The acrobatic routine is a new addition to the Games.
