Ground cinnamon from the Spice Class Brand is being recalled by American Spices of Ozone Park, New York. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports that there may be higher lead contamination in the ground cinnamon.
From December 1, 2023, until May 15, 2024, shops in New York City received deliveries of ground cinnamon under the Spice Class brand. No illnesses have been recorded as of yet.
The Food and Drug Administration reported earlier this year that ground cinnamon stocked by American bargain stores such as Dollar Tree and Family Dollar was found to be tainted with lead.

Ground cinnamon recall
Ground cinnamon from the “Spice Class Brand” is the product that is being recalled. The FDA states that it is packaged in PET jars that weigh 7 oz and 11 oz and have an expiration date of December 2026. Online sales were not made of the product.
The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYSAGM) conducted an examination and found that the product had high lead levels. Following this revelation, the manufacturer and distributor of the product have ceased operations. Lead pollution is being looked into by the FDA and American Spices.
Symptoms of short term lead exposure
Low levels of lead exposure over short periods of time may not show any symptoms at all. Elevated blood lead concentrations could be the sole indication of lead exposure.
According to the FDA, a child’s central nervous system may suffer irreversible harm if they are exposed to lead at high levels for weeks or months at a time. “This can result in learning disorders, developmental defects, and other long- term health problems,” the Food and Drug Administration stated.
Adults who are exposed to chronic levels of lead may experience hypertension, renal malfunction, and neurocognitive consequences.
What to do if you discover this product?
According to the Food and Drug Administration, “consumers should discontinue use of the product immediately and are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.”
