The national safety regulator has not yet given the project the go-ahead, thus the much awaited Sydney Metro launch will be delayed.
Transport Minister Jo Hyalen informed the media today that the Metro’s city segment was originally scheduled to open this Sunday, but the launch has been postponed because the National Rail Safety Regulator needs to do its final safety assessments.
How much longer travelers must wait for the Metro to open is unknown.
“Unfortunately, passengers are going to have to wait until we open Sydney Metro but not that much longer…it will be worth it,” Haylen stated.
“It will take a bit longer for the safety regulator to give us the all-clear.
“I have also said that safety and reliability comes first and I’m not in the business of putting additional pressure on the National safety regulator”
According to Haylen, “independent assurance” is the only thing left to do in the process and the railway is safe.
She added that 43 trains have been put through more than 200 metro exercises for testing.

The overbudget $25.32 billion Sydney Metro and Metro West project began construction in 2020.
At first, a $13 billion budget was anticipated.
Between Sydenham and Chatswood Station, the Metro City line will make stops at Crows Nest Station, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Gadigal Station, Central Station, and Waterloo Station. It will also travel between Sydenham and Chatswood Station.
