The Indian men’s cricket team will be led for the first time by new head coach Gautam Gambhir. Watch live IND vs. SL!
A three-match T20 cricket series between world champions India and hosts Sri Lanka will begin on Saturday, with all matches taking place at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy.
The three Twenty20 India against Sri Lanka games are set to start at 7:00 PM IST. In India, telecasts and live streaming are accessible.
Gautam Gambhir’s first task as the new head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team is this series. In his previous role, Gambhir served as the team’s mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders, who won the IPL in 2024.
Hardik Pandya was not selected as the Indian T20 captain for the Sri Lankan trip; instead, Suryakumar Yadav was chosen. In the T20 series last year, Yadav—who has won two times as the ICC Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year—also guided India to a 4-1 victory over Australia.
The vice-captain will be Shubman Gill, who earlier this month guided the Indian cricket team to a series victory against Zimbabwe.
Following their absence from the Zimbabwe series, Mohammed Siraj, Axar Patel, Rishabh Pant, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya—who was formerly the top T20 all-rounder in the world—make their returns.
The three-match ODI series will feature Indian cricket legends Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli later on. Kohli withdrew from T20 international cricket following the team’s victory in the T20 Cricket World Cup 2024.
A new captain has also been announced by Sri Lanka. Wanindu Hasaranga resigned from the position after the T20 World Cup in June, hence Charith Asalanka will captain the home team in the IND vs. SL T20 2024 series.
Earlier this year, Asalanka captained Sri Lanka in two Twenty20 matches against Bangladesh; they won one and lost the other.
In the meantime, veteran wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal will play his first Twenty20 International match since February 2022.
While another fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera has pneumonia and a respiratory infection, pacer Nuwan Thushara injured a finger. With Dilshan Madushanka and Asitha Fernando on the roster as their replacements, the pair have withdrawn from the series.
India has defeated Sri Lanka in 19 out of 29 men’s T20 international matches. Nine matches have resulted in victories for the men’s cricket team from Sri Lanka, while one match has ended in a draw.
The sides last faced each other in Rajkot in January of last year. Suryakumar Yadav, who topscored India’s 91-run victory over Sri Lanka with an unbroken innings of 112 off 51 balls, enabled the Men in Blue to clinch the three-match series 2-1.
