It would all come down to the women’s basketball final and the opportunity to tie China for the most gold medals at the Paris Olympics, with the United States trailing China by one gold medal.

The U.S. women’s basketball team persevered in a very close game to win 67-66 and the gold medal, marking the team’s eighth consecutive title. The women’s basketball game’s medals are typically the last ones given out each summer Olympics.

After the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique and the IOC declared on Sunday that Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu would win Jordan Chiles’ medal in the women’s floor final due to a decision made by an international arbitration court, the United States’ bronze total fell by one.

Three years ago in Tokyo, the United States won the gold medal race, defeating China 39 to 38. 113 medals were won by the United States in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. With 46 gold medals in Rio in 2016, the United States outperformed Great Britain and China with just 27 and 26 respectively.

The United States’ 126 medal haul in Paris was their third-highest total, surpassing their 174 medal haul from the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. A positive omen for Los Angeles in 2028?
