MLB analyst Zack Cimini offers predictions for Marcell Ozuna, Gunnar Henderson, and the other Home Run Derby competitors in 2024.
The eight contestants have been announced for Monday’s 8 p.m. ET event at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, and there will be a new Home Run Derby champion this year. But Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the winner in 2023, has chosen not to participate. There’ll be a former champion present. Among those vying to earn a third title and tie Ken Griffey Jr.’s record is Pete Alonso, first baseman for the Mets who won the Home Run Derby in both 2019 and 2021. The only other people to win multiple championships are Yoenis Cespedes and Prince Fielder.
As of now, Alonso is the +300 favorite in the 2024 MLB Home Run Derby (risk $100 to win $300). Marcell Ozuna, the designated hitter for the Braves, is listed at +380. Gunnar Henderson, the star of the Orioles, is next in line at +430. Bobby Witt Jr. (+470), Adolis Garcia (+500), Teoscar Hernandez (+1100), Jose Ramirez (+1400), and Alec Bohm (+1600) are the other contenders in the 2024 Home Run Derby lineup. A preview of the 2024 Home Run Derby
Pete Alonso has helped the Mets win the season with 18 home runs, but Cimini is fading him for Monday night’s major game. The “Polar Bear” hasn’t been unduly dominant in the tournament, so it will have fierce opposition. He had the highest score in a Derby round that ended without a tiebreaker in 2019 when he hit 35 in the opening round. He hasn’t won a round by more than one since winning that one with seven home runs. He lost to Seattle’s Julio Rodriguez by eight in the 2022 semifinals and by twenty in the 2023 opening round.
With 27, Henderson, 23, leads the field going into the game, followed by veteran Ozuna, 33, with 26. Henderson is a major factor in the Orioles’ competition with the Yankees for first place in the American League East, having hit 55 home runs in the last two seasons. Hernandez has hit 19 home runs this season, while Ramirez has hit 23. Ramirez has also found his home run swing.
Cimini is concerned about supporting Alonso this year because there is a strong field. According to Cimini, SportsLine, “the Home Run Derby has a deep and possibly the best pool of overall talent in recent years.” That, in my opinion, has the potential to take value away from Pete Alonso’s top spot on the odds board.
How to choose the Home Run Derby for 2024
